Invited talk on intellectual property rights by Tapasya Dua from IPConneqt
An invited talk on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was delivered by Ms. Tapasya Dua, Intellectual Property Specialist at IPCONNEQT and a registered Indian Patent Agent (IN/PA 1634) during Resonance 2026. It was delivered on July 29 2026 in NU Auditorium from 10:45 – 11:15 am.
The session witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 120 students, faculty members, and researchers. The speaker introduced intellectual property as a valuable asset that can be protected, licensed, transferred, and commercialized. She discussed the major forms of IP protection, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indications, and industrial designs, highlighting their significance in fostering innovation and economic growth. Through engaging examples, she explained trademark protection and shared the famous story of Coca-Cola, whose secret recipe has been preserved through confidentiality measures rather than patent protection, including the practice that key custodians of the formula traditionally avoided traveling together.
The session further explored the distinctions between designs and patents, the six different views used in design registration, and globally recognized patents such as the quadcopter drone, GPS, and Bluetooth technologies. Ms. Dua presented current trends in global IP filing activities, emphasizing the growing importance of innovation-driven economies. She explained the benefits of patents, including revenue generation, technology transfer, competitive advantage, and legal protection. Detailed discussions were held on the criteria for patentability, including novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability, as well as the patent filing procedure from application and examination to prosecution and grant.
To strengthen understanding, several practical examples and case studies were discussed, including the patent journey of AstraZeneca, the University of Mississippi Medical Center novelty case, and India’s well-known turmeric wound-healing case, which highlighted the importance of documenting traditional knowledge to prevent wrongful patent claims. The session provided participants with valuable insights into intellectual property protection, patent strategy, and the role of IPR in transforming innovative ideas into socially and commercially impactful solutions.
