NIIT University celebrates Gandhi Jayanti 2026

October 2 holds a special place for all Indians.  It is a day that saw the birth of two outstanding leaders the world has ever seen.  One is Mahatma Gandhi who was instrumental in securing India’s independence and known for his adherence to non-violence.  In fact, October 2 is recognized as the International Day of Non-violence by the United Nations in honour of Gandhiji.  The second is Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second prime minister whose exceptional leadership in the 1965 war is forever remembered.  Shastriji was known for his simplicity and integrity – two core values that India stands for.

A cultural evening dedicated to Gandhi Jayanti was organized on October 1 in the Auditorium at 6:00 PM to honor the enduring legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Bringing together students, faculty, and staff, the gathering served as a dignified tribute to the timeless values of truth, peace, non-violence, integrity and simplicity embodied by both leaders. The evening opened with an atmosphere highlighting the principles of social harmony and civic responsibility through artistic and literary expressions.

The programme commenced with a musical rendition presented by the university’s music society, Verismo. Through an evocative vocal and instrumental performance, the group set a reflective tone that honored the ethical spirit of the two leaders. Following the musical prelude, DebSoc NU, the Debating Society, took the stage to present an elocution segment. The cultural celebration was further elevated by the poetry club, Kavishala, whose members recited poetic tributes celebrating resilience, truth, and universal humanity. The expressive verses transitioned into a duet dance routine performed by Impetus, the university’s dance society. Blending classical and contemporary choreography, the dancers delivered a synchronized performance that visually captured the evening’s themes of harmony and unity.

The commemorative event concluded with a keynote address delivered by University Captain, Vasvi Nehra. Her speech urged the student community to adopt and display simplicity, leadership, and ethical commitment in their daily lives, drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s ethos of self-transformation and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s humility. The gathering drew to a formal close, leaving the audience inspired by the shared ideals of peace, integrity, and purposeful service to society.
